Over the past decade, London’s On The Corner records has been one of the most forward-thinking labels, releasing innovative futuristic music that blurs the lines between jazz, electronic music, African, Latin, broken beat and beyond. In the words of Sun Ra, “knock, knock, knocking at the door to the cosmos,” this label is knocking down all sonic barriers on for their celebratory tenth release, which is a limited edition triple vinyl gatefold compilation out on September 18th, appropriately titled Door of the Cosmos.

The Houston, Texas based trio Khruangbin (pronounced KRUNG-bin, a Thai word meaning “airplane”), featuring bassist/vocalist Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald “DJ” Johnson, follow-up their 2018 breakthrough release Con Todo El Mundo and recent notable collaboration with Leon Bridges (Texas Sun EP) with their highly anticipated third full-length album, titled Mordechai on the Dead Ocean label.

As a contribution to help support the Steve Reid Foundation, which is a non-profit organization aimed at helping musicians who are in crisis, the UK-based beat maker/producer The Maghreban (aka Ayman Rostom) and saxophonist Idris Rahman (Wildflower, Ill Considered, Soothsayers) have released a new electronic-meets-cosmic jazz rendition of Steve Reid’s 1976 spiritual jazz-funk classic “Lions of Juda”.

Every year their are a number of highly-anticipated releases that vinyl collectors and music fans cannot wait to listen in full, however some of my favorite releases are the ones that I didn’t see coming, and completely blow me away. This is certainly the case with the debut recording from the London-based cosmic groove quintet Natural Lateral.

Mark de Clive-Lowe celebrates 9 years of his jazz-dance club party CHURCH with new album

It’s been quite a busy year for Mark de Clive-Lowe. Already he has released two recordings with his brand new Japanese cosmic jazz group Rōnin Arkestra, and two additional albums that made up his Heritage project. For his final release of 2019, the Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist and producer presents his CHURCH Sessions, which MdCL describes as “equal parts jazz club, dance party and live remix experiment.”
