Take Vibe E.P. - Golden Brown

The Stranglers meet Dave Brubeck on this incredible 7inch release on Jazz Room Records

Back in May, Uk pianist and saxophonist Laurence Mason had an idea of meshing together two of his biggest musical heroes, Dave Greenfield of the seventies-era proto-punk band The Stranglers with the sixties cool jazz “Take Five” sound of Dave Brubeck. He didn’t think much would come of it at the time, however after posting a demo of this funky soul jazz tribute track to YouTube, titled “Golden Brown”, it immediately blew up and received over a million views, with hundreds of requests for a physical release on vinyl.

After iconic UK jazz dance DJ Paul Murphy became aware of this track, he quickly approached Mason about releasing the track on his Jazz Room Records label. Given the extreme high-demand, Murphy and the label were able to rush the pressing of the record, and have now made it available on a two-track 7inch, title The Take Vibe EP. Since it’s release in September, the record has been selling quickly, with a full-length album already planned featuring an extended release of the track for 2021.

The b-side track shouldn’t be ignored as well, featuring a hip cool jazz take to The Police’s 1979 track “Walking On The Moon”. Backing Mason on both tracks are Josh Cavanagh-Brierley on bass and John Settle on drums.

Overall, this is a great and inspiring story on how a simple idea could blossom into something much bigger, and should prompt as motivation for everyone to pursuit their creative ideas. Now do yourself a favor, and go purchase this brilliant new 7inch release!
