Orquesta Mayombe — CON EL RITMO DEL TAMBÓ

Jazz Room Records reissues 1981 Latin dancefloor classic from Nuyorican supergroup

Over the last few years, not only has Paul Murphy reissued a number of rare jazz dance and fusion gems through his label Jazz Room Records, he has put out a number of essential and rare Latin dancefloor recordings, including Tata Vasquez’s Ecstasy, Robin Jones led Denga and El Maja. This Spring, the UK label will reissue the 1981 album Con El Ritmo Del Tambó by the Nuyorican supergroup Orquesta Mayombe.

Featuring a 21-piece big band led by Chico Alvarez, the session also includes legendary trumpeter Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros, vocalists Jose Mangual and Mauricio Smith, percussionist Orestes Vilato (of the Fania All-Stars) and a heavy-hitting expansive lineup of numerous horn players and additional percussionists. From start to finish, this 10-track record is pure Latin heat that brilliantly captures the classic “NuYorican El Barrio” underground sound of the 60s and 70s. Some of the album’s standout tracks include “Esa Brujeria”, “Piñeiro”, “Rumba En El Solar”, and “Cuba Y Africa Son”.

It’s also worth noting that the sound quality of this reissue release is super, with it being re-mastered from the original master tapes.

Overall, this is simply Afro-Cuban jazz at it’s best. If this record doesn’t get you up on the dancefloor, you should probably check your pulse. Highly recommended!

Jazz Room Records’ reissue of Orquesta Mayombe’s ‘Con El Ritmo Del Tambó’ will be officially released April 28, 2023
