Estonian jazz-funk collective Estrada Orchestra’s debut album reissued
Detroit’s Funk Night Records has recently reissued the incredible self-tilted debut from Estonian-based quintet Estrada Orchestra, which marks the record’s 10th anniversary.
Originally self-released in 2015 with a limited quantity of 250 copies, this five-track recording fuses together jazz-funk, psychedelic grooves, cosmic tones, and adventurous avant-garde approaches. The majority of the album was recorded live using just four microphones during a single session at Estrada Orchestra’s rehearsal room in September 2014. At times, the music has a Heliocentrics-meets-Jaga Jazzist-meets-Mulatu Astatke feel.
Resided in Tallinn, the group is made up of some superb musicians, including Aleksei Semenihhin (Drums, Backing Vocals), Misha Panfilov (Electric Bass, Electric Guitar, Backing Vocals, Effects), Ilja Gussarov (Flute, Alto Saxophone, Backing Vocals), Vova Baskin (Organ, Synthesizer, Electric Piano, Backing Vocals), and Sasha Petrov (Percussion, Backing Vocals, Alto Saxophone, Saxophone).
Since the release of this recording, the group has gone on to become at the forefront of the underground Estonian jazz-funk scene. It’s great to see that this brilliant breakthrough recording finally receives wider scale release. Highly recommended!
