BBE Music releases fifth volume of their landmark Japanese Jazz compilation series
BBE Music’s J Jazz series concludes with its fifth and final volume in early 2026, bringing a celebrated archival project to a powerful conclusion. Since 2018, the series has shone a global spotlight on Japan’s golden era of jazz (late ’60s–’80s), revealing a deep well of innovation and rare recordings that reshaped international appreciation for the scene.
Curated by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, Volume 5 dives even deeper into their collections, spanning fiery jazz-funk, abstract piano, psychedelic fusion, and ultra-rare private press gems. With many tracks reissued for the first time, the compilation captures the full breadth of Japanese jazz at its most daring and expressive.
Some of the many highlights include Aoyama Gakuin 101‘s fusion groover “Fervor,” Seiichi Nakamura‘s jazz dance classic “Judy’s Samba,” Toshiyuki Honda and Burning Waves‘ jazz funk gem “Eastern Legacy,” Christal Zone‘s extremely rare and hypnotic “Rai Rai ライ・ライ,” Masahiko Satoh‘s cosmic and cerebral “History of Jazz,” Masaru Imada‘s deep and soulful “World Line,” among others.
Presented as a deluxe 3xLP with extensive notes and photography, it’s a fitting final chapter to a series that set a new standard for jazz reissues. Without a doubt, this will be one of the best compilation releases of 2026!
