BBE Music’s J Jazz series concludes with its fifth and final volume in early 2026, bringing a celebrated archival project to a powerful conclusion. Since 2018, the series has shone a global spotlight on Japan’s golden era of jazz (late ’60s–’80s), revealing a deep well of innovation and rare recordings that reshaped international appreciation for the scene.
For nearly a decade, London’s Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, have led the charge in reissuing some of the most adventurous and elusive Japanese jazz recordings through BBE Music’s acclaimed J Jazz Masterclass Series. Ahead of the highly anticipated J-Jazz Volume 5 compilation, two essential titles join the growing collection — Sachi Hayasaka & Stir Up!’s 1988 full-length Free Flight and a rare 1971 7inch from Christal Zone.
Paul Murphy’s Jazz Room Records has a slew of incredible releases on deck for this Spring, and one of the first of these records to come out is a limited-edition double-sided single 7inch, featuring two rare 1969 jazz dance heaters out of Japan.
Since the release of the series’ first compilation back in 2018, in addition to two follow-up compilation recordings and a growing number of select album reissues, BBE’s J Jazz has become the most definite collection exploring innovative and rare Japanese jazz. Curated by Tony Higgins and Mike Peden, the highly anticipated fourth compilation dives deep into one of the biggest and most diverse labels in Japan, Nippon Columbia.
