Planet Battagon Creates Droid Jazz on ‘Battagon Symphony’ EP
Over the past few years, the London-based label On The Corner has been releasing some of the most innovative and forward-thinking electric jazz and Afro-futuristic dance recordings.
Near the end of last year, the label added to their already extremely strong catalog of groundbreaking releases with the latest EP from the Sun Ra-influenced quintet Planet Battagon. Fully titled Battagon Symphony (Rough Guide to Neptunia pt. 1), this three track record fuses together jazz, electronics, and cosmic grooves. With a mixture of horns, acoustic drums, electronic percussive beats, and spacey synth-lines, it’s easy to understand why the London-based group describes their music as “Droid Jazz.” With one-time through this recording, I think listeners will be in complete agreement of that assessment.
As with almost all On The Corner releases, copies of this record are very limited, with the artwork being beautifully done by UK digital collage artist Victoria Topping.
Space is certainly the place, and Planet Battagon seems to be carrying on Sun Ra’s legacy by creating the next soundtrack for it.
