Outernational Sounds reissues Mr. Circle’s 1981 jazz dance classic ‘Thi Nam’
London’s Outernational Sounds, which is run by deejay and radio broadcaster Harv Nagi, has reissued the much sought-after 1981 jazz dance fusion classic Thi Nam by the widely talented German group Mr. Circle.
Originally released on the Stockfisch label, which was more known for putting out solo guitar music and singer-songwriters, this brilliant 6-track album is great from start to finish, fusing together cosmic keys from pianist and bandleader Mikesch Van Grümmer, surging Brazilian rhythms laid down by drummer Gerd Breuer and percussionist Ponda O’Bryan, soulful saxophone from Semel Van Peppel Jr., funky bass line grooves by Steve Dohmen, and some enchanting vocals and scat improvisations from the incredible Monica Linges. The record includes jazz dance heaters “Schoch-Schach”, “Juntos”, and “Thi Nam” with the epic 9-minute “Suka” and the jazz crooner “Tides”, featuring vocals by Bill Ramsay, not far behind.
With original copies hard-to-find and going for hundreds of dollars, it’s great to see this timeless masterpiece receive an official reissue. The album was fully remastered at Abbey Road from the original tapes and includes exclusive liner notes and quotes from the band members.
Available again after four decades of undeserved obscurity, this is a must-own release for any jazz dance or fusion fan, and arguably the best reissue of 2025!
