London’s Scrimshire channels frustration and anger on brilliant new album ‘Paroxysm’
Over the last decade, London-based Adam Scrimshire, who on his recordings simply goes by Scrimshire, has made his mark as one of today’s most forward-thinking producers. As a direct response to the frustration and anger that he felt in October 2022 related to the ongoing failures of the UK government, along with the horrible treatment of refugees, lower income individuals and more, he teamed up with an impressive cast of UK musicians and recorded this remarkably passionate new album, titled Paroxysm (which means: any sudden, uncontrollable outburst; a fit of emotion or action).
This brilliant recording, released on Scrimshire’s own label Albert’s Favourites, blends together a wide range of keys including Fender Rhodes, Moog Grandmother, Arp Odyssey, Sequential Prophet 6, and more with spacey cosmic textures, and programmed drum beats. A number of the tracks also feature some incredible special guest UK-based saxophonists in Idris Rahman (“Your Invasion Is A Lie”), Nat Birchall (“Unforgotten, Unforgiven”), and Tamar Osborn (“Flames”), in addition to guest vocals from Faye Houston (“Eyes Shut” and “Flames”) and spoken word from The Repeat Beat Poet (“What Is The State Of Our State” Part 1 & 2), who provides the overall powerful narrative for the album.
In channeling his overall frustration and emotions into a more positive and creative outlet, Scrimshire has put together one of this year’s most standout and important recordings. Highly recommended!
