UK’s SAULT releases fifth album ‘NINE’, available for 99 days
Over the last two-plus years, UK’s SAULT has been the most innovative collective in all of music, releasing four groundbreaking full length albums including last year’s highly acclaimed UNTITLED (Black Is) and follow-up UNTITLED (Rise) (BeatCaffeine’s #1 and #3 Favorite Albums of 2020), which centered around subjects of police brutality and racial injustices. The thought-provoking group, which features producer Dean “Inflo” Wynton Josiah, vocalist Cleo Sol, rapper/vocalist Melisa Young (aka Kid Sister) and numerous other guests and collaborators, returns with another brilliant recording, titled NINE, which according to the band, will only be available to download or stream digital for 99 days from it’s release date of June 25, 2021.
NINE, which titled follows in line with SAULT’s first two recordings in 2019 5 and 7, features ten tracks (nine songs, one heartfelt testimony) and is arguably the most soulful album from the group to date, taking on topics of continual police brutality, racism, alcohol abuse, community, and the importance of self-worth. Building off the foundation of the past recordings, the production continues to be ahead of the pack, incorporating funky percussion rhythms, driving bass grooves, electronic beats, with at times, epic strings, synths, and piano melodies. London-based rapper Little Simz also provides some superb verses on “You From London”. As with all of their releases, the music keeps you on your toes at all times, while still being able to absorb the track’s important and meaningful messages.
On point with all of their’s other essential recordings, NINE is incredible from start to finish, proving once again that SAULT continues to be the most forward-thinking group in the world today. As I type this, there is only 95 days left to download or purchase this new album (even though I’m sure vinyl copies will be floating around for some time afterwards) … don’t be caught napping, this is a timeless album that you’ll want in permanently in your collection well after it “digitally” expires.
