Tokyo’s 45trio covers Weldon Irvine’s soulful classic “I Love You”
A record that seemed to receive a lot of worthy play across numerous notable online radio shows (Colin Curtis, Kev Beadle, and others) during the final two months of 2022, was 45trio’s brilliant instrumental of Weldon Irvine’s soulful 1976 classic ‘I Love You’. Led by pianist and producer SWING-O, the Tokyo-based group, which formed back in 2009, also features bassist Sunapanng and drummer Masahiko Kubo.
This superb groove-oriented soul jazz rendition, along with a superb remix from DJ Koco (aka Shimokita) was released as a limited-edition 7inch single on the new Japanese label Bloom Music, and pretty much sold out instantly. Not surprising, the very few copies on discogs already seem to be skyrocketing price wise.
Overall, an incredible rendition of one of Weldon Irvine’s most iconic songs from a promising and talented upcoming piano trio. Many of us can only hope that in the coming year, we will see a second or even third pressing of this potential classic.
