The latest ‘If Music Presents…’ spotlights Dutch record shop Klinkhamer Records in great new compilation
For the latest release of Jean-Claude Thompson’s fantastic If Music Presents You Need This compilation series on BBE, he turns his focus to Dutch record shop Klinkhamer Records and invites owner Michel Veenstra to compile some of his most notable “holy grails” that have come through the shop.
Located in the city of Groningen, Klinkhamer Records was founded by Martin Klinkhamer in the year 2000, with Michel and his brother Stephan eventually taking over the business in 2005. Over the the last 20-plus years, the record shop has built a strong reputation and has enjoyed the privileged access to many rare and forgotten jazz music from the Netherlands and beyond. Michel often toyed with the idea of doing a compilation, however if wasn’t until Jean-Claude got involved with the project. After sifting through a list of rare, never-before reissued records and working out appropriate licensing, the compilation is now a reality.
Featuring six incredible tracks, the record features a mix of highly-obscure spiritual grooves, jazz-funk, soul and gospel from the late 70s and early to mid 80s. Much of the music is from across Holland, however the compilation features some music that has come out of Chicago and Italy.
With a wide array of essential hard-to-find gems, this brilliant compilation makes these remarkable tracks much more accessible to wider audiences, and more importantly sheds a well-deserved light on this great record shop and the people behind it.
