Jazzman’s latest ‘Spiritual Jazz’ compilation explores the archives of the legendary Impulse! label

Through it’s highly acclaimed Spiritual Jazz compilation series, the London-based label Jazzman Records has shed light and unearthed some of the greatest and most obscure spiritual jazz recordings from all corners of the globe. Most recently, the series has dove deep into the vaults of groundbreaking labels like Blue Note, Prestige, and Steeplechase. With their 12th volume of the series, Jazzman continues it’s label focus, exploring “the house that Trane built,” better known as Impulse! Records.

This past Saturday, BeatCaffeine’s TJ Gorton was a special guest on Morgan ‘Moman’ Nixon‘s weekly two-hour live video streaming show Zinelab Transmission. Often there is a weekly theme tied to each show, and in memory of one of the greatest jazz collectors from Hawaii, Melvin M. Murakami, Moman and TJ played some of their favorite new, rare, and classic jazz records.

Over the past decade, London’s On The Corner records has been one of the most forward-thinking labels, releasing innovative futuristic music that blurs the lines between jazz, electronic music, African, Latin, broken beat and beyond. In the words of Sun Ra, “knock, knock, knocking at the door to the cosmos,” this label is knocking down all sonic barriers on for their celebratory tenth release, which is a limited edition triple vinyl gatefold compilation out on September 18th, appropriately titled Door of the Cosmos.

Strut releases compilation celebrating the seminal spiritual jazz label Black Fire Records

On the heals of Now-Again’s recent box set featuring five classic albums from the Black Fire record label, including the previously unreleased Live From The East session from Juju, London’s Strut records has just released a great new compilation, titled Soul Love Now: The Black Fire Records Story 1975​-​1993, celebrating the seminal spiritual jazz and conscious soul label.

The legendary spiritual Afro-jazz collective Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, who became known due to the discovery of their now highly sought-after rare self-released seventies recordings Lalibela, King Of Kings, and Birth / Speed / Merging, have made waves recently through their newer releases on Strut Records. The iconic group returns with a brilliant new album on the London-based label, titled Shaman!.

BeatCaffeine’s ‘TJ Plays It Cool’ Jazz-Funk Mix

An hour long mix featuring a selection of soulful jazz-funk gems, including many that have Bay Area roots like the all-female jazz group Alive!, Oakland’s spiritual jazz ensemble Sons And Daughters Of Lite, saxophonists Bishop Norman Williams and Pharoah Sanders whom both resided for a time in the Bay Area, recording for El Cerrito-based Theresa Records. There is also some funky global jazz grooves from France, Spain, Brazil and beyond!

For the latest addition to BeatCaffeine’s Listen Here series, we feature an incredible live remix suite by Los Angeles-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Mark de Clive-Lowe that he produced for the La Ceiba Festival. The multi-media suite, which features spiritual jazz and pulsating broken-beat grooves with powerful visual imagery and spoken words of James Baldwin, activist Tamika D Mallory and real-time chants of Black Lives Matter is called “Sawubona: We see you. We are here.”
