Space Is The Place: London’s The Comet Is Coming has landed
One of the leading artists and saxophonists in the currently thriving London jazz scene, Shabaka Hutchings, returns with the Afro-futuristic space-jazz band The Comet Is Coming on a brilliant new album titled Trust In The Lifeforce of The Deep Mystery.
For their first recording on Impulse! Records, the cosmic trio featuring King Shabaka (Shabaka Hutchings), synth wizard Danalogue (Dan Leavers), and drummer Betamax (Max Hallet), aim “to answer universal questions with universal truths” according to the label.
Musically, this nine-track recording has an outer worldly sound, blending astral and spiritual jazz melodies, with pulsating electronics, droning synth bass lines, and groove-centric rhythms. The album feels like a UFO (or I guess a comet for this context) dramatically approaching it’s way to Earth, landing and exploding with cosmic energy, and then lifting off back into the universe.
This recording follow’s Hutchings’ Mercury Prize-nominated Sons of Kemet release Your Queen Is a Reptile, which ranked #2 on BeatCaffeine’s Favorite Albums of 2018.
Space is the place, however the comet has landed, and the sounds are universal.
