Rising London trombonist Rosie Turton releases incredible cosmic jazz recording ‘Expansions and Transformations: Part I & II’
Over the last several years, London-based trombonist Rosie Turton has continued to make her mark as one of the prominent musicians and composers among the thriving UK jazz scene. In 2019, she released her superb debut EP Rosie’s 5ive via the Jazz re:freshed label, followed by a couple of outstanding recordings with the incredible 7-piece Nérija ensemble. She returns with a brilliant new self-released cosmic jazz release, titled Expansions and Transformations: Part I & II.
This remarkable four-track recording takes the listener on a sonic journey that taps into different moods and emotions, from unsettling tension to melodic spiritual textures and uplifting grooves, while tapping into influences of jazz greats Pharoah Sanders and Abdullah Ibrahim. The music beautifully blends together interwoven layers of horns, strings, atmospheric electronics, and dynamic percussion rhythms. According to Turton, “Parts I and II are a story of finding a way to break through the turbulence and remembering that on the other side of the storm there is always the sun shining.”
On the flip, “The Unknown (rework)” is a new more upbeat rendition of the tune of the same title from Rosie’s 5ive, while the EP concludes with a fantastic jazz dance rework of “Part II” by one of Turton’s frequent ongoing collaborators, Jitwam.
Limited to only 300 copies, the record is packaged with a 30″x30″ unique artwork insert hand-printed (with color variations), signed, and numbered by the artist Siraaj Mitha.
Overall, a really great and innovative recording from one of the most talented rising stars among not just the London scene, but all of jazz.
