New Ruby Rushton Album ‘Ironside’ Announced, Releases Single
Early this week, flautist, saxophonist, producer and 22a label owner Tenderlonious (aka Ed Cawthorne) announced that a new Ruby Rushton album, titled Ironside, will be coming out this April.
This exciting news coincided with the digital release of a brilliant new single from the album title “Eleven Grapes,” which will also be featured on a limited-edition 7inch (only 500 copies) on February 22nd. A reworked version of an earlier Tenderlonious composition, titled “One Mo’ Dram,” will be included on the flip (as well as the new full-length).
The upcoming new full-length follows up the quartet’s three previous breakthrough releases, Two For Joy (2015), and Trudi’s Songbook Part 1 & 2 (which will also be reissued on Feb 8th). The Ironside recording is heavily influenced by jazz concepts from iconic artists like John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef, blended with elements of Afrobeat, hip-hop, electronic music, and UK-rooted underground culture.
Led by Tenderlonious, the rest of the band is rounded out by an impressive cast of musicians that include Nick Walters (trumpet, percussion), Aidan Shepherd (Fender Rhodes, synths), and Tim Carnegie (drums).
With each and every release from 22a, Tenderlonious and company continue to show why they are at the forefront of the UK’s currently thriving jazz scene, and this new album only looks to add to that proclamation.
