New Renditions of Rare Groove Classics by Multi-Instrumentalist Medline
French multi-instrumentalist, and producer Medline’s new Solstice record features brand new renditions of legendary original soundtrack, library, and jazz funk music.
This album includes eight covers from some of the most rare and sought-after records including tracks from Alain Goraguer’s holy grail La Planète Sauvage soundtrack, Lee Mason & His Orchestra’s “Shady Blue,” René Costy’s “Scrabble,” and more. All of the originals have been heavily sampled by the likes of Madlib, J Dilla, Mndsgn, Tall Black Guy and many others. The new versions of the tracks do not stray too far away from the originals, as the main goal of the album was to pay tribute to the original classics on one recording.
Another fascinating component to Solstice is Medline did not use any samples on the recording, opting instead of a mixture of live and virtual instruments to reproduce sounds similar to what is heard on the original tracks. In a recent and fascinating interview on The Find, Medline stated “As an artist, I can’t stand it to take a piece of art from someone else to make it my own…When you sample, you steal the work of all musicians that recorded the music: the sound of the studio, the mixing of the engineer, and mastering and the sound of the vinyl made by the plant.”
Released back in June, this record has quickly sold out at a number of record shops and online vendors. I highly recommend snatching up a copy of this uniquely original album while a few still remain!
