Mr. Bongo reissue’s Trio Mocotó’s 1977 obscure Brazilian classic
This month, Mr. Bongo released a very welcomed reissue of Trio Mocotó’s 1977 obscure Brazilian self-titled classic.
The trio originally formed in 1968 in the Jogral nightclub in São Paulo, and were the backing band on three prominent Jorge Ben albums, including his 1969 self-titled release, Força Bruta in 1970, and Negro É Lindo in 1971. They also were also very influential in developing the samba rock sound during the seventies.
On their 1977 album, also titled The Brasilian Sound on some of the international releases, fuses together samba, jazz, and soulful vocal melodies that feature large string and brass arrangements, with funky grooves and rhythms.
Highlights on the record include the samba soul classic “Nao Adianta,” and a brilliant cover of Jorge Ben’s “Que Nega E Essa.” Other standout tracks include the mid-tempo groover “O Meu Violão,” and the uptempo samba rock cut “Toda Tarde.”
Overall, Mr. Bongo has once again made another highly rare Brazilian recording more readily available with this nicely-crafted reissue release.
