More Vibes From The Tribe: Phil Ranelin’s 1974 ‘The Time Is Now!’ Reissued
The UK-based Pure Pleasure label continues it’s recent series of essential Tribe Records reissues with the re-release of Phil Ranelin’s 1974 avant-jazz masterpiece The Time Is Now!.
Featuring other prominent members of the legendary Detroit collective including clarinetist/tenor saxophonist Wendell Harrison and trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, the recording represents Ranelin’s first album as a leader.
Much different from the trombonist’s 1976 jazz-funk classic Vibes From The Tribe, this recording is a lot more free in it’s instrumentation, blending avant-garde improvisation, and hard bop, with deep soulful spiritual melodies, and innovative free-form rhythms. Influenced by the music concepts of Pharoah Sanders, Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, and the seventies Detroit jazz scene, the music is powerfully progressive in it’s overall sound, while maintaining a strong foundational groove.
Overall, another groundbreaking release from one of the most forward-thinking collectives of the past decade.
