Los Angeles producer and keyboardist John Carroll Kirby returns with cosmic LP ‘Dance Ancestral’
Los Angeles-based composer, producer, and pianist John Carroll Kirby teams up with Canadian producer, composer, DJ and sound artist Yu Su (Ninja Tune) on an incredible new cosmic groove-oriented album on the Stones Throw label, titled Dance Ancestral.
This brilliant nine-track recording features a heavy dose of spacey synths and keys, ambient and hypnotic tones, and head-nodding rhythms. More electronically focused than Kirby’s previous albums, this full-length record takes the listener a cosmic meditative voyage that loosely follows the narrative of a day unfolding, reflecting what Kirby calls, “the innate steps we take in life.”
Most of the music is played or constructed by Kirby with additional production duties from Yu Su. The session also features drums by Jamire Williams, bass and pedal steel by Daniel Aged, and celestial music pioneer Laraaji on the album’s standout opening track, “Dawn of New Day”.
Overall, this is another impressive release from a remarkable artist that is always pushing his sound forward to new dimensions.
