London’s Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes team up on brilliant new Blue Note album ‘What Kinda Music’

Two of London’s most forward-thinking artists in multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and producer Tom Misch and drummer Yussef Dayes team up for a brilliant new electronic-soul-meets-jazz-funk album, titled What Kinda Music on Blue Note Records imprint Beyond The Groove.

Prior to this incredible release, both artists have had been making waves within their own respected music scenes for a number of years. After releasing a couple beat tapes, Misch’s electro-soul 2018 debut full-length Geography found it’s way on many “best of” lists, while Dayes has been promptly featured on some of the best UK jazz releases over the past few years, including 2016’s groundbreaking Black Focus album on Brownswood Recordings with keyboardist Kamaal Williams.

On this incredible new twelve-track (fifteen songs w/ deluxe version) album, this duo collaboration proves to be extremely fruitful, blending nicely together Misch’s soulful vocals, spacey keyboard and guitar melodies, with Dayes jazz-funk and hip-hop inspired percussion grooves. The overall sound dances between electronic soul, cosmic instrumentals, and hypnotic jazz fusion.

The session also features some great special guests, including rapper Freddie Gibbs on the smooth laid back gem “Nightrider,” electric bassist and ongoing Dayes collaborator Rocco Palladino on the psychedelic groover “Lift Off,” and upcoming saxophonist Kaidi Akinnibi on the head-nodding closer “Storm Before The Calm.”

Through this unique, and admittedly surprising, collaboration Tom Misch and Yussef Dayes has released one of the best and most feel-good albums of the year.
