Lorenzo Morresi & Le Isole release superb Italian library music inspired jazz-funk recording
Italian-based producers and multi-instrumentalists Lorenzo Morresi and Luciano Cantone (aka Le Isole) have teamed up to release a superb new album, titled Pop Flop on Space Echo Records, that pays homage to 1970s Italian library music that groundbreaking artists like Piero Umiliani, Sandro Brugnolini, Amedeo Tommasi, Alessandro Alessandroni and others helped pioneer.
Staying true to the sound, Morresi and Cantone recorded the 20-track album using an incredible collection of rare Italian vintage synthesizers (Crumar Composer, Davoli Synth, Elgam ES-200, Farfisa Polychrome, Roland Juno-60, Synket by Paolo Ketoff, etc.) combined with funky bass lines and head-nodding drum grooves. The recording has an overall warm and cinematic analog feel throughout, while still feeling modern and innovative.
Morresi holds it down on synths, bass and guitars, while Cantone provides the drums and percussion on the session. Joining them on the record, is a number of notable special guests, including Ed Cawthorne aka Tenderlonious (flutes), Giovanni Guerretti (electric piano), Fabio Mina (Hulusi Flute on “Savana Urbana”), Alberto Napolioni (electric Piano on “Savana Urbana”), Francesco Savoretti (percussions on “Savana Urbana”) and Agostino Maria Ticino (who help provide the synthesizers).
Pop Flop is an impressive recording that brilliantly connects influences from the golden age of Italian library music with contemporary production approaches of today, resulting in a sound that’s certainly inspired by the past but still forging ahead into the future. Highly recommended!
