London’s Collocutor, led by Tamar Osborn, releases highly-anticipated third album ‘Continuation’
Since releasing their breakthrough debut album Instead in 2014, Collocutor has become one of the most dynamic jazz groups to emerge out of London. Led by baritone saxophonist Tamar Osborn, who has also been a key contributor over the past half-decade on numerous genre-defying recording projects, collaborating with artists like Emanative, Sarathy Korwar, Khalab, Jessica Lauren, Tenesha The WordSmith, Penya, Siti Muharam and many others. A newly re-vamped ensemble returns with their highly-anticipated third album Continuation.
As with all of their releases, this new six-track album was released on London’s highly eclectic On The Corner Records. From start to finish, Continuation takes listeners on a journey, blending together spiritual and modal jazz, haunting atmospheric tones, and spacious percussion rhythms, while incorporating Middle Eastern, and African influences and folk melodies. Much of the album has a meditative feel, especially on tracks like “Deep Peace,” “Pause,” and title track “Continuation,” however the record also features the explosive free-wheeling cut “The Angry Ones,” and the hypnotic groove-oriented song “Lost and Found.”
On this recording, Tamar is featured on baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, and flute, and she is backed by a solid cast of musicians that include tenor saxophonist Josephine Davies, Mike Lesirge on both tenor saxophone and alto flute, bassist Suman Joshi, guitarist Marco Piccioni, percussionist Maurizio Ravalico.
Overall, this is another brilliant recording from Tamar and Collocutor, continuing to explore and expand musically, while making their mark as one of the most innovative groups in jazz right now.
