Listen Here: Worldwide FM’s ‘America 2020’ w/ Kahil El’Zabar
In the run up to the US Election on November 3rd, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM has put together an incredible thought-provoking series America 2020, which explores the theme of ‘What it means to be American in 2020’. The series has included mixture of inspired music and spoken word interviews from some of the most groundbreaking artists across all genres including Lady Blackbird, Algiers, Pan Amsterdam, Tune-Yards, Kahil El’Zabar and more.
Each two hour mix are incredibly fascinating, however the episode that I highly recommend the most is with legendary Chicago-based percussionist Kahil El’Zabar, who recently just released a brilliant and timely new album, titled Kahil El’Zabar’s America The Beautiful on Spiritmuse Records.
On this episode, El’Zabar discusses racism in America, the global pandemic, despotic U.S. leadership, disproportionate poverty, Black Lives Matter and other disenfranchised peoples’ movements, climate change and the economic disparity of our planet. With these same topical themes addressed throughout his music, El’Zabar words are backed by music from his last three recordings America The Beautiful, Spirit Groove, and Be Known Ancient/Future/Music (all released on Spiritmuse Rececords).
I cannot recommend this episode and this series enough. Shoutout to Worldwide FM for putting it together. Please spend sometime checking it out here.
Remember to vote this Tuesday, November 3rd.
