Kalita Records reissues in-demand 1980 soulful funk album from Nashville student medical group The IgG Band
London’s Kalita Records, who consistently unearths essential gems, has recently reissued the obscure 1980 soulful disco-funk masterpiece Ultra/Sound from The IgG Band, which was made up of medical students at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.
Originally privately released in a small run on band member Clifford Becker’s Infusion Records imprint, the brilliant recording has over the years become highly sought-after by record collectors and DJs. Formed in March 1979 as an outlet for the growing pressures brought on by the member’s medical studies, the eight-piece group eventually were able to generate enough material to record an album the following year at Hilltop Recording Studios in Nashville, with each band member contributing their part separately when their busy medical schedules allowed. Featuring seven-tracks, the album nicely blends together soulful vocals and melodies with cosmic funk and jazz grooves.
Originally distributed by the band themselves, mostly sold to friends and family members, the group became a bit of a local success before they eventually parted ways after graduating medical school. The members stayed in contact periodically over the years, however have never been able to get together and perform again.
Now more than 40 years later, it’s great to see this phenomenal album receive an official re-release for new generations of listeners, DJs, and collectors to enjoy.
