Jazz Room Records reissues Carlos Franzetti’s 1977 dancefloor classic ‘Graffiti’
Continuing the streak of putting out must-own releases, Paul Murphy and his label Jazz Room Records are reissuing Carlos Franzetti’s hard-to-find jazz dance classic album Graffiti, which was originally released on Guinness Records (not related to the drink) in 1977.
Recorded after the Argentinian composer, arranger and pianist had moved to New York City and was trying to break into it’s jazz scene, this incredible recording didn’t receive much attention upon it’s initial release. Fast forward a number of years to London’s early jazz dance scene in the 80s when DJ’s pick-up on the all-time gem “Cocoa Funk”, and this record became highly sought-after by collectors.
Featuring six-tracks, the album fuses together jazz-funk, cosmic disco grooves, and soulful Latin-inspired percussion rhythms. Even though “Cocoa Funk” makes this recording worthy all on it’s own, the record is truly brilliant from start-to-finish with a number of standout dancefloor primed cuts, including “Beatriz”, “Graffiti”, and “Lady Soho”.
This represents just one of many milestones of Franzetti’s music career, who played with everyone from Art Blakey to the Fania All-Stars, and recorded timeless disco tracks with Candido, Two Tons of Fun, Sylvester, and many others. Checkout his recent 4-hour interview with Gilles Peterson on WorldwideFM.
The German-based Sonorama Records originally reissued the recording on 2xLP back in 2007, and even copies of that edition are creeping into the $100 mark. Therefore, it’s really great to see Jazz Room Records make this essential album readily available again!
Carlos Franzetti’s ‘Graffiti’ is officially released on Jazz Room Records October 28, 2022.
