Gerardo Frisina — Soul Drum

Groundbreaking Italian producer Gerardo Frisina returns with brand new 12inch EP ‘Soul Drum’

For more than two decades, Gerardo Frisina has been one of the most forward-thinking artists to successfully blur the lines between jazz, house, and Afro-Latin rhythms. The Italian producer returns with an incredible new twelve-inch EP on Schema Records, titled Soul Drum, marking his first release in two years.

This brilliant four-track recording, which serves as a teaser for his forthcoming album Joyful Sound, includes three brand new songs and two versions of the title track. Similar to most of Frisina’s previous works, this EP features pulsating Latin rhythms that incorporate both acoustic and electronic-based instrumentation, including echoes of tribal voices, piano keys and wind instruments (trumpet, saxophone, flute), cosmic spacey textures, and programmed beats. Primed for the dancefloor, the tracks also serve nicely as a spiritually hypnotic listening experience.

The EP is dedicated to the memory of bassist Enzo Frassi, who contributed to the recording. The session also features longtime Frisina collaborators in Fabrizio Bernasconi (piano, Fender Rhodes), Gendrickson Mena (trumpet, piano), Alfonso Deidda (baritone and tenor sax, flute) and Ernesto Lopez (drums, percussion).

Overall, another outstanding Afro-Latin jazz dancefloor release from one of the most groundbreaking and innovative producers of this sound, and an exciting early sample of what is certainly one of the most anticipated albums of 2022.
