Gilles Peterson’s presents new compilation featuring live sessions from London’s Maida Vale Studios
About 18 months ago, Gilles Peterson had the opportunity to present a live session on his BBC 6 radio show at London’s legendary Maida Vale Studios. Recorded specifically in studio MV4, which is where the classic John Peel sessions took place, the London-based DJ, record label owner, and music producer brought together some of the most forward-thinking jazz artists currently making waves in the UK scene. Now those memorable sessions are finally going to be available on a new compilation, appropriately titled Gilles Peterson Presents: MV4.
Released on Gilles’ Brownswood label, this limited-edition eight-track double vinyl release features an incredible cast of musicians including Fatima, Asheber, Nubya Garcia, Hak Baker, Oscar Jerome, and Joe-Armon Jones, who’s band which features Dylan Jones, James Mollison, Mutale Chashi (also of Ezra Collective), and Marijus Aleksa acts as the backing group for much of the session. The breakthrough Bristol based collective, Ishmael Ensemble also add two brilliant tracks to the compilation.
Even though there wasn’t any original plans to make these recordings available on wax, Gilles decided to put this compilation out after being truck by how amazing these special sessions turned out in the end.
Overall, this is a great time-capsule release that brilliantly captures one of the best live recorded London jazz sessions that’s taken place over the past couple of years.
