Far Out Recordings reissues Eumir Deodato’s 1973 Brazilian fusion classic
Following the reissue of Eumir Deodato’s 1965 Brazilian jazz masterpiece Ataque from his Os Catedráticos group early in the year, Far Out Recordings has also recently reissued the group’s hard-to-find seventies jazz-fusion recording Os Catedráticos 73.
Where Ataque has a much more post-bossa nova sixties jazz sound, this 1973 recording fuses together electric Brazilian jazz melodies with “Nu Yorica” styled Latin rhythms, and North American-inspired soul and funk grooves. The album’s opening track, “Arranha Ceu” (Skyscrapers), is a dance floor jazz classic, and a favorite among collectors and rare groove deejays.
Originally recorded in both Rio de Janeiro and New York, Os Catedráticos 73 was put out following Deodato’s first two breakthrough jazz-fusion releases for Creed Taylor’s CTI Records. The album features a number of Brazilian percussionists, including Azymuth drummer and founding member Ivan Mamão Conti, as well as some of CTI Records’ top session brass players.
Remastered and pressed to 180g vinyl, Far Out Recordings has done a great job(again!!!) of making this obscure and funky Brazilian classic readily available to audiences globally.
