Co-founded by tenor and soprano saxophonist Søren Skov (also of Debre Damo Dining Orchestra) and keyboardist Peder Vind, Søren Skov Orbit is an experimental Danish quintet that was formed back in 2016. The group has just released their brilliant debut album, Adrift, on the superb New York-based Frederiksberg Records.

Featuring 6-tracks, the exploratory recording is steeped in cosmic excursions, spiritual hypnotic grooves, heavy reverb, soaring saxophone melodies, and layered percussion rhythms. Standout tracks “Orbiting” and “Naration” both have a trance-like pulsating vibe.

The group also includes bassist Casper Nyvang Rask, drummer Rune Lohse and percussionist Ayi Solomon of the legendary 80’s Ghanaian roots/highlife band Classique Vibes, which helps provide the recording with an African-inspired jazz tone.

Overall, Adrift is an impressive and highly unique debut that should make it’s way to the top of many year-end “best of” lists. Definitely a group to keep tabs on moving forward.
