Cosmic psychedelic funk group The Heliocentrics release ‘Telemetric Sounds’ on Madlib’s Invazions label
London’s cosmic-jazz-meets-psychedelic-funk group The Heliocentrics continue to push their otherworldly sound into new orbits on their second full-length release off of Madlib’s Invazions label.
Titled Telemetric Sounds, this brilliant seven-track album builds on the adventurous cosmic psychedelic sound of the ensemble’s last album Infinity of Now, and their two previous releases for Soundway Records in A World of Masks and The Sunshine Makers OST. The group’s latest recording fuses together electronic tones, spacey Moog synths, and distorted guitar lines, backed by funky bass grooves and driving percussion rhythms. According to the band, the majority of the material on this record is made up from a single, completely improvised 35 minute session, with some of the musicians unaware that the music was even being recorded.
Led by drummer Malcolm Catto and bassist Jake Ferguson, the recording also features longtime collaborators keyboardist Jack Yglesias (also of Saravah Soul), baritone saxophonist Jason Yarde, vocalist Barbora Patkova, guitarist Dan Smith, Sylvia Hallett on strings (Hurdy Gurdy and Sarangi), Raven Bush on string arrangements and additional electronics, Oliver Parfitt on Moog, and Tom Hodges on electronics. As with all Heliocentrics albums, the music was recorded at Catto’s legendary analog-based Quatermass Studio.
With each new release, this incredible boundary pushing collective seem to find ways to explore and expand their futuristic sound to new dimensions, and this is definitely the case on Telemetric Sounds. Overall, it’s another impressive release from one of the most groundbreaking groups of our time.
