This past Saturday, BeatCaffeine’s TJ Gorton was a special guest on Morgan ‘Moman’ Nixon‘s weekly two-hour live video streaming show Zinelab Transmission. Often there is a weekly theme tied to each show, and in memory of one of the greatest jazz collectors from Hawaii, Melvin M. Murakami, Moman and TJ played some of their favorite new, rare, and classic jazz records.
An hour long mix featuring a selection of soulful jazz-funk gems, including many that have Bay Area roots like the all-female jazz group Alive!, Oakland’s spiritual jazz ensemble Sons And Daughters Of Lite, saxophonists Bishop Norman Williams and Pharoah Sanders whom both resided for a time in the Bay Area, recording for El Cerrito-based Theresa Records. There is also some funky global jazz grooves from France, Spain, Brazil and beyond!
On Saturday, June 20th, Kerem Gokmen invited to me to put together a guest mix for his weekly Dubmission show on the Pittsburgh, PA based independent radio station 91.3FM WYEP. Given that it was a little while since my last mix, I was honored and excited to compile a mix for this broadcast.
Even though some regions have been dealing with COVID-19 for over two months, for many of us, it seems like the world has changed over night. With many of us now (as we should) “sheltering in place,” and working from home, I thought I would put together a curated an uplifting jazz-focused playlist designed to help spark creativity throughout the day.
Last month, I kicked off a new jazz-focused night called SPACE at downtown Oakland’s Soul Provisions lounge, with the goal to create a community gathering space for jazz fans, musicians, and record collectors. Each month, I will be joined by either guest DJs, or a live jazz act. From time to time, I hope to also feature vinyl vendors that specialize in jazz.
On Friday, January 4th, I spun a one-hour live streamed deejay set on Fault Radio at Paradise Records in Oakland. Fault Radio is an East Bay-based weekly online radio featuring both emerging local artists and businesses in the Bay Area.
On November 2nd, innovative trumpeter and composer Roy Hargrove sadly passed away at the far too young age of 49. His death was caused by cardiac arrest brought on by kidney disease.
The iconic songwriter, composer, poet, and activist Gil Scott-Heron was one of the most influential artists of the last century. With the help of multi-instrumentalist and long time music counterpart Brian Jackson, Gil Scott was able to create a unique and revolutionary sound that fused jazz, funk, and soulful grooves with politically driven poetry and vocals that helped produce timeless classics like “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” “Home is Where The Hatred Is,” “The Bottle,” and “Johannesburg.”
