Analog Africa celebrates 70s era Amazonian dance music from Northern Brazil
Analog Africa’s 28th compilation, titled Jambú e Os Míticos Sons Da Amazônia, highlights Amazonian dance music from the Brazilian city of Belém during the 1970s.
Due to it’s geographical port location at the northern region of the State of Pará, Belém has long been a cultural melting pot of musical innovation, combining influences from native Amerindians, Europeans, Africans, and Caribbeans. This led to the creation of new sounds being created like Carimbó, Samba-De-Cacete, Siriá, Bois-Bumbás and bambiá. With additional influence of local soundsystem culture, radio airplay, and record labels, Belém became a hotbed for unique Amazonian-rooted dance music during the seventies.
Featuring nineteen tropical dance floor gems, this record celebrates some of the best music during this golden era. Compiled by Analog Africa’s label boss Samy Ben Redjeb and Australian DJ/Producer Carlo Xavier, Jambú is truly up there with some of the label’s best releases to date. The music is a wild combination of uptempo percussive rhythms and layered brass melodies, with funky backing grooves, exotic instrumentation, and chanting vocals.
Overall, this is an absolutely incredible compilation from Analog Africa that brilliantly captures the innovative tropical dance sounds that spawned out the highly culturally-musical Amazonian port city of Belém.
