For the latest release of the fantastic Jazz Is Dead series, Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad team up with two iconic legends in trombonist Phil Ranelin and Wendell Harrison, founders of the 70’s Detroit-based independent label and collective, Tribe Records.
Even though the group of musicians were very much ignored by the mainstream at the time, Detroit’s Tribe is now considered one of the most legendary collectives and jazz labels during the seventies, featuring jazz greats like Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave, Harold McKinney, and others. Now, labels Strut and Art Yard have teamed up to release the first compilation celebrating the modern era recordings from this collection of artists.
We take a closer look at one of the most legendary jazz collectives of the seventies in Detroit’s Tribe, and some of their classic recordings from members like Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave, and others.
Highly accomplished Detroit-born drummer Gerald Cleaver, who has been a staple among the New York jazz scene performing in forward-thinking groups with artists like Matthew Shipp, William Parker, Michael Formanek, Chris Lightcap, Joshua Abrams, Craig Taborn, Steve Swell and many others, returns with an experimental new album, titled Griots, that explores the depths of electronic music.
This December, London-based independent label Clap City Records will be reissuing the 7inch version of the highly-obscure 1975 jazz-funk classic ‘Farewell To The Welfare’ by Wendell Harrison and the legendary Detroit Tribe collective.
London’s Emanative, led by drummer, composer, and producer Nick Woodmansey, teams up with jazz great and co-founder of the legendary Detroit label Tribe Records, trombonist Phil Ranelin on a brand new rendition of the jazz-funk classic “Vibes From The Tribe”.
The UK-based Pure Pleasure label continues it’s recent series of essential Tribe Records reissues with the re-release of Phil Ranelin’s 1974 avant-jazz masterpiece The Time Is Now!.
With so many incredible reissues in 2019, I decided to break-up this year’s “best of” into two sections, full length albums and singles. Out of all the lists I put together for these year-end posts, both reissue lists were probably the most challenging to compile.
I know, I know … it’s 2019, and it’s time to start looking ahead to the new year. Before I do that, I need to get one final “Best of 2018” list out there. With so many great compilations this year, it would basically be criminal to not include this releases in any year-end recap.
Soul Jazz Records releases volume two of there critically acclaimed Soul of A Nation compilation series. The first volume of the series coincided with the exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power that debuted at London’s Tate Modern museum in 2017.
