Emanative & Phil Ranelin - Vibes From The Tribe

Tribe’s Phil Ranelin & Emanative team up on new version of ‘Vibes From The Tribe’

London’s Emanative, led by drummer, composer, and producer Nick Woodmansey, teams up with jazz great and co-founder of the legendary Detroit label Tribe Records, trombonist Phil Ranelin on a brand new rendition of the jazz-funk classic “Vibes From The Tribe”.

The original version of the funky deep electro-acoustic jazz masterpiece, which was ranked #5 on BeatCaffeine’s Top 100 Jazz-Funk list, was the title track off of Ranelin’s highly obscure 1976 album, an essential recording in Tribe’s catalog.

Taking on a new version of this all-time classic is quite an ambitious task, however this brilliant revised version succeeds all possible expectations. Similar to the original, the new rendition features Ranelin on trombone, however also contributes some strong outspoken vocals calling out lies by both British and US elected officials.

Led by drummer Woodmansey, Ranelin is backed by an incredible cast of London-based musicians that include trumpeter Simon Finch, tenor saxophonist Ben Hadwen, Tamar Collocutor on baritone saxophone, Jessica Lauren on Wurlitzer organ and keys, bassist Suman Joshi, percussionist Vince Vella, Phillip Harper on congas, Sarathy Korwar on bowed cymbals, and Woodmansey on drums.

On the flip, Manchester’s Al Breadwinner dishes out a heavy-hitting funked-out dub version of the track that’s worthy on it’s own.

All proceeds from the 7inch single are being donated to the Steve Reid Foundation, a charity named after the legendary drummer Steve Reid and currently helmed by Nick Woodmansey. The Foundation, founded by Gilles Peterson, aims to help people working in music who are in crisis, dealing with sickness or disabilities, as well as supporting emerging new talent. Both the performing artists, studio engineer Tim Pennells, and the studio owner Sam Shepherd (of Floating Productions Studio) donated their time and energy into this charitable recording.

Overall, this is great and heartfelt release that truly pays due respect to one of the most innovative jazz artists of his time, while helping a tremendous cause.
