Funky Rob

1977 West African Funk classic ‘Funky Rob Way’ Reissued

2019 is already turning into an extremely active year for the UK-based Mr. Bongo label, as they have recently released another essential reissue in Rob’s 1977 West African funk classic Funky Rob Way.

The Ghanaian pianist and vocalist, who honed his craft in Benin playing with Orchestre Poly-Rythmo, was heavily influenced by James Brown and his legendary funk backing band the JBs. These strong musical influences certainly come through, featuring a lot of wah-wah guitar, funky organ grooves, cosmic synth lines, blaring horn melodies, heavy-hitting African-influenced rhythms, and “James Brown-like” call -and-response vocals.

Funky music is in my blood. What you hear is the coming out of my mind. — Rob

Originally released on a small independent label, Funky Rob Way has become one of the most sought after 70s era Afro-funk records, with OG copies going for upwards of around $2,000-$3,000. Thanks to Mr. Bongo, this record is available, now more than ever, on wax!

Highly recommended for fans of William Onyeabor, Ebo Taylor, and Pat Thomas.
