UK Saxophonist Nat Birchall releases new Sun Ra-inspired cosmic jazz album ‘Mysticism of Sound’
With some remarkable releases over the past decade on Jazzman and Gondwana Records, as well as his recently brilliant collaborative work with dub producer Al Breadwinner, Manchester-based saxophonist and composer Nat Birchall has made his mark as one of UK’s most forward-thinking musicians.
Inspired by the sounds of Sun Ra, Birchall’s latest recording, titled Mysticism Of Sound, nicely fuses together sixties-era Impulse! spiritual jazz saxophone melodies, in the vein of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, with spacey synths, atmospheric grooves, and hypnotic rhythms. The results is nine-track cosmic masterpiece, that’s both meditative and exploratory.
For this self-released session, Birchall plays all the instruments himself, including tenor and soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, Korg Minilogue synth, bass, drums, hand drums, bells, and shakers.
Overall, this is another truly incredible release from the UK native that continues to produce some of today’s most essential jazz recordings. Limited to just 1,000 copies, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this future-classic quickly!
