UK multi-instrumentalist Yarni releases superb cosmic jazz album ‘Pigna’
Sheffield-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Harris, aka Yarni continues his exploration into new sounds with a superb soulful cosmic jazz album, titled Pigna, which references a glistening pine cone standing upright – the longstanding symbol of Sicilian openness and welcome hospitality that can be found in homes throughout the Italian island.
An open approach to music has been a consistent approach on previous Yarni releases, including 2017’s Entkommen, which was inspired by the juxtaposition of brutalist architecture with nature in Derbyshire and translated into a mix of electronics and acoustics, while 2021’s Boro was the product of a journey to Japan and an immersion in its uniquely historic musical space.
On this new brilliant 10-track recording, Yarni takes his sound in another adventurous new direction, from disco-funk and jazz dance groovers like “Midnight Getaway” and “Nova”, to the Afrobeat sounds of “Utopia” and the warm lush cinematic cosmic vibes of “Chic”, “In A Dream” (ft. vocalist Emily Marks), “Space Travel” (ft. vocalist Sheila Lee) and more.
The session, which pieces together live improvisations from a nine-person ensemble, includes Yarni on drums, percussion, synths, and guitars. He’s backed by Rachel Shirley on flute, Emily Marks also on cello, vocalist Jeff Darko, Ally McMahon on electric bass, Ben Marks on euphonium and trombone, trumpeter James Atasharoo, and saxophonist Jonoa.
Already receiving much praise from DJs Tim Garcia, Luke Una, Colin Curtis, Kev Beadle, and others, Pigna is arguably Yarni’s most complete and impressive recording to date. Highly recommended!
