UK drummer & composer Emanative releases incredible spiritual jazz recording ‘Abstract Intuition’
Drummer, composer, and producer Emanative (aka Nick Woodmansey), who has been at the forefront of the emerging UK jazz scene, has just released an incredible new spiritual jazz recording, titled Abstract Intuition.
This 4-track 38-minute session brilliantly blends together layered percussion rhythms with hypnotic textures, looping electronic elements, and meditative grooves with each song building up to a crescendo as it moves along. One of the standout singles, “Messimalism (Above Thought)” takes the listener on a trance-like sonic journey that can even work on the dancefloor.
The recording includes an superb cast of musicians, led by Emanative on drums, percussion, vibes, synths, and the album’s overall mixing and production, joined by legendary trombonist and longtime Arthur Russell collaborator Peter Zummo, tenor saxophonist, bass clarinet and flautist Ben Hadwen, upright bassist Twm Dylan and Raimund Wong taking care of the cassette loops, Yamaha MT400 and processing. Other contributors include Sarathy Korwar on tabla, Magnus Mehta on congas, bata and shakers, and the always great Jessica Lauren on tanpura and tape delays.
The album’s amazing artwork was done by Berlin-based contemporary painter Danny Gretscher.
Great from start to finish, Abstract Intuition is right up there with some of Emanative greatest work (which is definitely saying something). Definitely one of the best releases of 2024!
The album is now available digitally, and the vinyl release will come out around September 6th. Don’t sleep though, quantities are extremely limited.
