Work Money Death — Thought, Action, Reaction, Interaction

Tony Burkill’s Work Money Death returns with spiritual jazz masterpiece ‘Thought, Action, Reaction, Interaction’

Following the stellar 2021 release The Space In Which The Uncontrollable Unknown Resides, Can Be The Place From Which Creation Arises, UK saxophonist Tony Burkill returns with his large ensemble Work Money Death for another absolutely remarkable new recording on ATA Records, titled Thought, Action, Reaction, Interaction.

This incredible recording is a salute to the now sadly deceased master of the spiritual sound Pharoah Sanders, and in particular the spontaneity of his recording process. Each of the expansive four tracks on session were recorded in one take without rehearsing. The players may have known where they were starting off, however from there, none of them were sure where they would end. The result was pure brilliance, spiritual jazz as it’s absolute best featuring soaring solos, meditative soulful grooves, layered horns, dynamic percussion, hand claps, spoken word and even a choir.

Backing Burkill on the recording is Richard Ormrod on woodwinds and low brass, Steve Parry on trumpet, flugelhorn horn and French horn tuba, harpist Gareth Wilkinss, guitarist Chris Dawkins, bassist Neil Innes, drummer Sam Hobbs, additional percussion by the Headingly Hand Choir, spoken word by K.O.G (Kweku Of Ghana), and a choir featuring The Band, Jasmine Kennedy and Shaneen Mooney.

Tony Burkill and his superb Work Money Death ensemble have once again released a masterpiece recording, one that truly captures the spirit of those essential late 60s/early 70s spiritual jazz recordings on Impulse! and Strata-East Records. Definitely one of the best albums of the year!
