TJ Gorton spinning at SFMOMA Art of Noise — July 23, 2024

TJ Gorton’s 07.23.24 SFMOMA ‘Art of Noise’ Exhibition playlist

This past Tuesday, on July 23, 2024, I had the great honor of operating the Devon Turnbull HiFi Soundsystem as a part of SFMOMA’s ‘Art of Noise‘ exhibition, which was curated by Associated Curator of Architecture and Design Joseph Becker.

It was an incredible and unique experience where I played some of my favorite records for 7 straight hours. Most of the selections had a personal connection to me, especially the Arthur Russell and Sun Ra records. I mostly went for spiritual and cosmic jazz, as I thought it would work very well in a “listening” type atmosphere on that remarkable soundsystem. I was also overwhelmed by the overall response from the people that attended, from good friends and SFJAZZ colleagues, to people I had never met before and the two groups of grade schools that showed up.

I am truly grateful for this experience, which is one I will never forget and cherish forever. Thanks to SFMOMA, Joseph Becker, and all the people that showed up and listened to the music.

As I like to do with a majority of my sets, I put together a track list of the selections I played. As usual, it’s not in complete order as played, but it’s very close. Thanks again, all if you haven’t, please visit the ‘Art of Noise’ Exhibition before it closes on August 18, 2024. Enjoy!
