Untitled — The Vinyl Factory

The Vinyl Factory releases new compilation dedicated to Jean-Michel Basquiat

The Vinyl Factory, in collaboration with Lonely Table and Anja Ngozi, bring together emerging and established UK-based musicians in different genre-defying combinations for a new compilation inspired by the life and work of Jean-Michel Basquiat, titled Untitled.

Basquiat was an American poet, musician, and a highly influential New York-based graffiti artist in late 1970s of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. By the 1980s, his paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. He was known for using social commentary in his paintings to address racism, political injustices, colonialism, and poverty. He sadly passed away in 1988 at the young age of 27, due to his ongoing addition to heroin.

In 2017, London’s Barbican Centre put on an expansive Basquiat retrospective exhibit, and this ultimately became a main influence for the Untitled compilation.

The record features eighteen notable UK musicians, in often never-happened-before collaborations, creating new original works inspired by Basquiat’s strong legacy. The compilation spans across a wide range of genres including jazz, experimental electronic, post-punk, dub and ambient influences. Participating musicians on the recording include Shabaka Hutchings, Kojey Radical, Wu-Lu, Nubya Garcia, Lex Amor, Ego Ella May, LayFullstop, Moroka, AJ Kwame, Lord Tusk, Roxanne Tataei, Kz, Mala, Joe Armon-Jones, Confucius MC, Kwake Bass, Maxwell Owin & Coby Sey.

Over a two year span, Lonely Table co-founder Lexy Morvaridi and London-based DJ Anja Ngozi curated and produced this compilation, while record’s incredible artwork was created by Ngozi and brilliant photographer Fabrice Bourgelle.

Overall, this is a musically brilliant and well-crafted compilation, bringing together some of the UK’s most forward-thinking minds, in a collaborative effort that truly helps capture the spirit of Jean-Michel Basquiat, his work, and his legacy.
