Tenderlonious’ quartet Ruby Rushton returns with new album ‘Ironsides’
Led by flautist, saxophonist, producer and 22a label boss Tenderlonious (aka Ed Cawthorne), the London-based Ruby Rushton quartet have released is much-anticipated fourth full length album, titled Ironside.
This brilliant new recording is the next chapter for the group, following three incredible full-length releases that included ‘Two For Joy’(2015) and ‘Trudi’s SongbookPart 1 & 2’.
Recorded over two day sessions at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, the new album is heavily influenced by the spiritual jazz concepts from iconic artists John Coltrane and Yusef Lateef, while also paying homage to groundbreaking electric fusion bands Weather Report and The Headhunters. The music brilliantly blends jazz melodies and improvisation with elements of Afrobeat, looping hip-hop rhythms, exotica percussion, cosmic electronic grooves, and UK-influenced underground culture.
Led by Tenderlonious, the rest of the band is rounded out by an impressive cast of musicians that include Nick Walters (trumpet, percussion), Aidan Shepherd (Fender Rhodes, synths), and Tim Carnegie (drums).
The first single “Eleven Grapes,” was featured on a limited-edition 7inch (only 500 copies) that was released back at the end of February.
Overall, this is another great recording that continues to prove that Tenderlonious and his Ruby Rushton quartet are one of the leading and most forward-thinking bands currently coming out of London’s thriving jazz scene.
