Tenderlonious explores influential jazz classics on ‘You Know I Care’
For about a decade, UK-based producer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and 22a label boss, Ed ‘Tenderlonious’ Cawthorne has been one of today’s most forward-thinking artists, incorporating jazz, house, electronic beats, Latin, classical Indian music and more into his recordings. For his latest release, titled You Know I Care, he focuses his energy on exploring the classic jazz material that has inspired him over the years.
Featuring six-tracks, this recording includes stellar quartet renditions of compositions by pioneering jazz legends like Jackie McLean’s “Poor Eric”, Duke Pearson’s “You Know I Care”, Clifford Jordan’s “John Coltrane”, Stanley Cowell’s “Maimoun”, Charles Tolliver’s “On The Nile”, and Wayne Shorter’s “Infant Eyes”.
Backing Tenderlonious on the session is an impressive cast of musicians and longtime collaborators, including pianist Hamish Balfour, bassist Pete Martin, and drummer Tim Carnegie, who is also a member of the groundbreaking group Ruby Rushton.
Overall, this is a superb recording that serves as Tenderlonious’ “love letter” to some of the boundary-pushing musicians/composers and spiritual jazz hero’s of the late sixties and seventies. Highly recommended!
