Takeo Moriyama’s 1983 Japanese Jazz Masterpiece ‘East Plants’

As a part of BBE Music’s ‘J Jazz Masterclass series,’ spawning from the brilliant J Jazz: Deep Modern Jazz from Japan 1969-1984 compilation that came out earlier in the year, the label has just reissued Takeo Moriyama’s 1983 masterpiece East Plants. Since the time of it’s original release and up until now, only the deepest Japanese jazz collectors were aware of this recording by the drummer/composer.

The music on East Plants is wildly complex and diverse, going from raga-like Eastern influenced melodies on the album’s title track to heavy rhythmic post-bop on “Fields.” Other highlights include the spiritual modal gem “Kaze,” and the uptempo burner “Take,” that features an incredible two minute drum solo from Moriyama.

Reissued for the first time on vinyl, this double 180g LP includes the original artwork, obi strip, translated liner notes and insert, fully endorsed by Moriyama himself. Overall, a great addition to what has already become a remarkable jazz series from BBE.
