New York’s superb Frederiksberg Records has recently reissued the highly obscure 1978 self-titled album from the pioneering South African-based jazz-fusion group, Spirits Rejoice.
The incredible German-based label Analog Africa, who has arguably been the leader when it comes to releasing rare music rooted from major regions in Africa and parts of Central and South America, have recently issued another brilliant compilation, titled Congo Funk!, which unearths a number of funky selections from two influential capital cities along the Congo River.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of arguably the greatest Afrobeat album ever recorded, in Fela Kuti and The Africa 70’s Shakara, Brooklyn’s Partisan Records has put out a special edition reissue of the two-track classic that includes an additional 7inch record featuring new renditions of both “Lady” and “Shakara (Oloje)” by one of the leading lights among the London jazz scene, Ezra Collective.
As with new releases, 2022 was a remarkable year for reissues and previously unreleased recordings. It feels like with every great new release or artists that breaks through on the scene, there are still so many records from the past to still discover, or make more readily available again. I also feel that with each year that goes by, the quality of reissues get’s better and better. The care and work that goes into many of these releases is astonishing.
As part of their Limited Dance Edition series, the outstanding German-label Analog Africa has recently released an incredible four-track collection of essential gems from legendary Ivorian artist better known as the “king of Ziglibithy,” Ernesto Djédjé.
Following the release of both their breakthrough 2019 self-titled debut EP, and last year’s standout double A-side 12″ single Baba Ayoola / Carry Me Home, the London 8-piece collective Kokoroko, led by trumpeter and vocalist Sheila Maurice-Grey, returns with their highly-anticipated full length album on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, titled Could We Be More.
When it comes to organizing a record release, there might not be something more challenging than compiling music for a compilation. Unlike a Spotify playlist, these releases require sourcing and licensing the music, which is often much more challenging than selecting the tracks. That being said, compilations play an important part in telling a story about either a time period, a region, a sub-genre of a sub-genre and many times, all of the above. They often also serve as musical “gateway drugs” into whole worlds of lesser known music for listeners, in which they can continue to explore well beyond each release.
Over the past twelve months, not only was there a tremendous amount of great new music put out into the world, but we also saw a high-level of incredible reissue releases, including many previously unreleased recordings that had been shelved for 30-40 years or more.
For over a decade, Matsuli Music, have unearthed and reissued some of the most essential South African recordings ever made. With their latest release, the UK-based label has turned their attention to the incredible story and sounds behind Soweto’s first nightclub, known as the Pelican Club in an incredible new compilation.
The German-based Analog Africa has just unearthed a collection of incredible DIY seventies recordings from an adventist church in Cameroon’s capital city of Yaoundé, and released them together on an essential new compilation, titled Cameroon Garage Funk.
