Sun Ra Arkestra’s Knoel Scott & Marshall Allen release direct-to-tape session on Night Dreamer Records
London’s fantastic Night Dreamer label has recently released a superb new recording, titled Celestial, by Sun Ra Arkestra saxophonist, percussionist and vocalist Knoel Scott. The record, which represents Knoel’s first studio record in 40 years, also features the legendary Arkestra bandleader and long-time collaborator Marshall Allen (originally joining the Arkestra in 1958, and leading the band since 1995 following “the departure” of Sun Ra).
Featuring five-tracks over 38 minutes, this brilliant album includes everything from hard bop and cosmic space-aged tones (mostly provided by Allen’s EWI), to adventurous improvisation. Some of the standout selections include Knoel’s interstellar 12-minute vocal ballad title track “Celestial”, which was originally written for the Sun Ra Arkestra with strings but was never recorded. Another notable highlight is Knoel’s soulful groove-oriented tribute to his late mentor Dr. Ken ‘Makanda’ McIntyre, appropriately titled “Makanda”.
Backing Scott and Allen on the session is two shining lights among the current UK jazz scene in pianist/keyboardist Charlie Stacey and bassist Mikele Montolli, alongside Arkestra alumnus Chris Henderson. Similar to to all Night Dreamer releases, the album was recorded direct-to-disc at Artone Studios.
For some context and background, Scott joined the Arkestra back in 1979 after being heavily inspired by the group’s performances at the Beacon Theatre in 1977 and 1978, fulfilling what he described as “… his life’s dream.” After leaving the group for a few years, he actually rejoined the band to fill in for Marshall Allen during a short absence, and has been an active member of the ensemble ever since. Most recently, he has stepped in for Allen (who hasn’t been able to travel outside of the Philadelphia region) in directing Arkestra’s live performances.
Overall, Celestial is remarkable recording that represents the culmination of decades of collaboration among these two pioneer musicians. Highly recommended!
