Strut releases second volume highlighting French Caribbean label Disques Debs
The London-based Strut label follows-up the first volume in a multi-compilation series celebrating the musical archives of the legendary Guadeloupe imprint Disques Debs, with another remarkable recording titled, Cadence Revolution: Disques Debs International Vol. 2. Where last year’s release focused on some of the label’s earliest recordings during it’s first decade, this latest compilation highlight’s the label’s standout releases during the seventies and early eighties.
This prolific Guadeloupe-based label and studio was launched in the late fifties by Henri Debs, and remarkably has continued for over 50 years. In that span, Disques Debs International has released more than 300 7” singles and 200 albums, covering styles varying from early biguine and bolero to the more modern sounds of zouk, reggae and créole.
Similar to volume one, this great new compilation was compiled by Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) and Emile Omar (Roseaux), and focuses on the labels development of the unique Cadence sound, pulling together a wide-array of disparate Afro-Latin influences into a Pan-Caribbean blend of rhythms, styles and languages. During the seventies, this music dominated Caribbean region dancehalls and clubs.
This well-crafted sixteen-track double LP also features previously unseen photos from the Debs archive, extensive liner notes, and an interview with singer and trombonist Christian Zora (Les Maxel’s, Energy).
Overall, Cadence Revolution is an incredible and enlightening compilation, that continues to shed light on the iconic Disques Debs label and an essential chapter in French-Caribbean dance music.
