SPACE :: Live Jazz-Funk Mix 01.17.19 Part 1 by TJ Gorton & DJ Flow
Last month, I kicked off a new jazz-focused night called SPACE at downtown Oakland’s Soul Provisions lounge, with the goal to create a community gathering space for jazz fans, musicians, and record collectors. Each month, I will be joined by either guest DJs, or a live jazz act. From time to time, I hope to also feature vinyl vendors that specialize in jazz.
For the kickoff of SPACE, I was excited to be joined by DJ, producer, and At The Ave Records label boss DJ Flow. We both spun a choice selection of (mostly) 70s era jazz-funk essentials. The music was great, and the overall vibe from everyone that was their that night was truly incredible. It was the perfect way to kickoff this monthly event.
We ended up recording over two hours of our live set, and after listening to it, Flow and myself were so excited about how things turned out that we definitely wanted to share the mix. I decided to break up the mix into two parts. Below is part 1, with part 2 coming out later this week.

This month, we are excited to have special guest deejay Moman from the Long Road Society label. For this evening, we’ll be spinning both essential jazz-funk gems and some of the exciting new releases currently coming out of the thriving London jazz scene.
Moman just released a live 90-minute mixtape featuring some of the best London jazz recordings of 2018, which is a great preview for the next SPACE event. I highly recommend checking out this new mix, and hope to see everyone on Feb 28th.
