SAULT — Untitled (BLACK IS)

SAULT releases groundbreaking album ‘Untitled (Black Is)’, speaking out against racism & police brutality

The mysterious group SAULT took 2019 by storm with two breakthrough albums 5 and 7. Over time, we have learned that this foward-thinking eclectic UK-based collective consists of producer Dean “Inflo” Wynton Josiah, vocalist Cleo Sol, and rapper/vocalist Melisa Young (aka Kid Sister). The trio has appropriately on Juneteenth, put out their third album Untitled (Black Is), which a powerful and timely release that speaks directly to the Black Lives Matter movement.

On this brilliant new 20-track (!!!) release, the message behind the music is definitely deliberate, speaking out against racial injustices and police brutality, at times even using protest-influenced chats like “Guns down / don’t shoot” and “racist / policeman”. The album beautifully captures the mixture of emotions surrounding this moment in time, featuring songs of anger, sadness, out cry, and hope for the future. Production wise, the album captures a similar vibe of their past two recordings, blending together post-disco grooves, Afro-funk, electronic beats, and soulful melodies. The record also features a number of prominent guests, including Michael Kiwanuka and Laurette Josiah.

In announcing this album, the group stated “We present our first ‘Untitled’ album to mark a moment in time where we as Black People, and of Black Origin are fighting for our lives. RIP George Floyd and all those who have suffered from police brutality and systemic racism. Change is happening…We are focused.” According to the group, all proceeds will be going to charitable funds.

Given the strong momentum around the Black Lives Matter movement, and the need and urgency to take action to end racism, I’m certain that there will not be a more important album released this year. Untitled (Black Is) is one of the essential albums of our time.
